Scholar Patrick Chura, who suggests Emmett Till was a model for Tom Robinson, enumerates the injustices endured by the fictional Tom that Till also faced. Chura notes the icon of the black rapist causing harm to the representation of the "mythologized vulnerable and sacred Southern womanhood".[27] Any transgressions by black males that merely hinted at sexual contact with white females during the time the novel was set often resulted in a punishment of death for the accused. Tom Robinson's trial was juried by poor white farmers who convicted him despite overwhelming evidence of his innocence, as more educated and moderate white townspeople supported the jury's decision. Furthermore, the victim of racial injustice in To Kill a Mockingbird was physically impaired, which made him unable to commit the act he was accused of, but also crippled him in other ways.[27] Roslyn Siegel includes Tom Robinson as an example of the recurring motif among white Southern writers of the black man as "stupid, pathetic, defenseless, and dependent upon the fair dealing of the whites, rather than his own intelligence to save him".[60] Although Tom is spared from being lynched, he is killed with excessive violence during an attempted escape from prison, being shot seventeen times.
The book was made into the well-received 1962 film with the same title, starring Gregory Peck as Atticus Finch. The film's producer, Alan J. Pakula, remembered Universal Pictures executives questioning him about a potential script: "They said, 'What story do you plan to tell for the film?' I said, 'Have you read the book?' They said, 'Yes.' I said, 'That's the story.'"[161] The movie was a hit at the box office, quickly grossing more than $20 million from a $2-million budget. Jake Brigance, the young (white) lawyer short on experience but long on bravado in the movie A Time to Kill, tells us he took the case of a black man who killed two white men who raped and brutalized his ten-year old daughter "to prove that a black man can receive a fair trial in the South." Yet A Time to Kill says much more about the filmmaker’s view of justice and the American legal system than it does about race and racism.
Set in Canton, Mississippi in 1995, A Time to Kill, is a cynical update of To Kill a Mockingbird, the 1962 film set in 1930's Maycomb, Alabama. In To Kill a Mockingbird, a black man is wrongfully convicted of raping a white woman. In A Time to Kill, an admittedly guilty man gets away with cold-blooded murder. That a white man guilty of the same would be acquitted justifies the black man’s acquittal is the film’s message.
At the 1962 release of To Kill a Mockingbird, many anointed a hero the film’s defense attorney, Atticus Finch (Oscar-winner Gregory Peck). He accepted the controversial case without hesitation, stood down a mob intent on lynching his client before trial, and lived his conviction that "our courts are the great levelers; all men are created equal." Despite Finch’s best efforts, his client is convicted by an all-white, male jury notwithstanding its belief in the defendant’s innocence. The defendant is later killed while trying to escape. Upon learning of his client’s death, Finch remarks: "The last thing I told him was not to lose heart. We’d ask for an appeal. … we had more than a good chance."
But no one in this film believes in justice, certainly not enough to follow its dictates or trust its determination. During a visit to Brigance’s office shortly before gunning down the rapists, the defendant recalls the case of "four white boys who raped a black girl over in the Delta last year." "They got off, didn’t they," he asks rhetorically. During the same meeting, the defendant exacts Brigance’s promise to represent him should he "get in a jam." During a jailhouse conference after the killings, the defendant speaks not of justice but of "getting off." Even Brigance confides that had his daughter been raped he too would have circumvented the justice system.
Yet in the film’s view, justice has prevailed because a black man who killed his daughter’s rapists received the same latitude a white man would have received for the same crime. Lost on the filmmaker is that neither vigilante should be acquitted.

Art first appeared in a trap with his mouth sewn shut, along with a man named Trevor that his eyes sewn shut, making communication with each other impossible. The two were being pulled by metal collars they were wearing that would kill them if neither man escaped in time. Art found the key to his neck in the back of the head of Trevor. Trevor, in the belief that Art is a threat, tries to attack, engage in a fight that eventually ends with Art killing Trevor, hitting him in the head with a hammer. Art then rips his mouth open and escapes, but returns later and then disappears for a period of two weeks.During that time, a motel room was rented in his name, in which a lot of teams slipped in piece by piece to build a complex trap for Ivan Landsness, a serial rapist. Art was later forced to participate in another game in the Gideon Warehouse, where he was assigned the task of maintaining Detectives Eric Matthews and Mark Hoffman alive until Daniel Rigg final tests were complete, just as Matthews was standing on top of a block of ice that melts slowly with a rope chain around his neck. If Matthews were to slip, he would be strangled to death, and the water would then channel towards Hoffman, who was tied to a chair with what appeared to be an electrode, which would kill him by electruction.
Samuel L Jackson gave a memorable performance playing Carl Lee Hailey, the avenging father who had killed the rapists in broad day light because he lacked faith in the justice system. Mathew McConaughey was convincingly solid as Jake Brigance, a young, sharp and witty but inexperienced defense lawyer.
